- anguish: extreme mental distress
- unbearable physical pain
- agony: intense feelings of suffering; acute mental or physical pain; "an agony of doubt"; "the torments of the damned"
- torment: torment emotionally or mentally
- distortion: the act of distorting something so it seems to mean something it was not intended to mean
The above are definitions of the word torture and based on what I have heard so far concerning the ongoing torture controversy, they all seem to fit quite nicely. Now if someone could kindly explain to me how shoving a cloth down someone's throat and then pouring water over their face does NOT constitute torture, I shall be relieved of the tremendous feeling of guilt as a resident of these United States.
Based on the definitions above it would also be feasible to declare that contorting a person's body into gruesomely unnatural positions in order to worm out some piece of information from that person is indeed TORTURE. If I could fully understand the dynamics surrounding the Bush administration's acceptance of torture, perhaps my views would be different, but to be honest my beliefs about this particular matter are so deeply rooted at this point that it would be near impossible if not completely impossible to change my mind.
No matter what stance our dear GOPPers take on the issue (I think we all know their stance by now), I firmly believe that to torture a fellow human being goes beyond sinning. Those who ordered the torture of the prisoners at Gitmo and in the secret prisons around the world, have stooped to the level of the leaders of the terrorist groups and have in effect become terrorists themselves. I should feel some sort of sadness for these people but I just can't summon up that emotion when it comes to these people. They chose this path and hopefully one day they will realize the error of their ways. Many of these men go to church and claim to worship God, but they so easily forget that God, once vengeful, saw what a toll his wrath took upon his children and swore to never put his people through his vengeful path again. To those who believe they worship God but condone such heinousness: Go back and read your Bible, whichever version it may be, but it's the same in every single one. I, unlike you have actually read what it says instead of pulling stuff from thin air. I beg you to please reconsider what you have done and what you have said and pray for any amount of forgiveness God may grant you with. For those who may be atheist, try to make peace with the world before you leave it.
