Blog Action Day: The Importance of Water

Last week 42,000 people died from unclean water and living conditions. Depressing huh? I think it's time we stopped moping about this and actually do something. Let me repeat that DO SOMETHING! We are the product of the 21st century, by all accounts the best century to be alive in. We've got the technology and we've got the ability. So why haven't we fixed this problem? That question usually does not have a straight forward answer. Sometimes the population of a village/town/city/country don't have clean water because of poor sewage treatment, poor economy or just plain corruption. I'm not going to go into too much detail about the reasons for the lack of clean water around the world, I am more concerned with what we can do about it.  Clean water technologies do exist and are ready to combat the water crisis around the world. I'll list a few here.
1. Ultraviolet and Ultra-filtration water purification systems
2. Slow sand filtration systems
3. Reverse osmosis
4. Distillation
5. Purification powder - Sadly I do not know as much about this form of water purification as I should. What I do know is that a special powder is poured into a water source. This powder then condenses the impurities in the water and the impurities sink to the bottom and clean water is left on the top available for drinking.

In addition to these technological advances there are numerous charities involved in providing clean water to those who really need it. I had the privilege of hearing a presentation from the founder and CEO of charity:water last year. It was a presentation that opened my eyes to what could be done to help those in need of clean water. Learning more about what is available and possible routes of action is the first step to bringing the very real possibility of clean water for all to life.
