The Destruction of Hope

It's official. I have given up hope for America to change, at least for another decade. At this point I am afraid that the election of Barack Obama has revealed more pre-existing divisions in this country than any of us were ready to admit to. We are all aware of the racial tensions that exist in this country but I was blissfully unaware of just how ignorant many Americans are concerning their own country as well as the world they live in. It's sad when Iranians know more about America than Americans do. Here are a list of things I've heard actual Americans say:
-"There are 50 states? I thought there were 13."
-"The capital of New York is Manhattan."
-"George Bush was the 20th President of the United States."
-"Carolina is one state, they just say North and South Carolina to help figure out where they are."
-"I thought Cheney was President!"
Ok that last one can be forgiven because if you think about it, Cheney was President.
